What Would Mark Do?
When I retired from the IT industry we decided to not maintain two residences: Great Falls, VA and Bethany Beach, DE. Being somewhat of a minimalist, the idea of only maintaining a single residence was ideal for my next phase of life for new traveling adventures and different hobbies, volunteer activities, learning, etc. We (Lauri and I) voted to move to Bethany Beach full-time as an experiment. After selling our Great Falls, VA home our daughter and family soon thereafter rebuilt their Falls Church, VA home and we finished out their lowest level with a bedroom, full bath, recreation room and extra office/workout room. That has worked out excellently as they are the main reason we go back to the DC area.
Life at the beach, full time has advantages and challenges. Advantages are the lessened traffic and hecticness of life style. Walks on the beach every day! All the amenities of quality restaurants and sports play. The biggest disadvantage for me has been the lack of close by continuing eduction opportunities. Software coding is best as a collaborative activity and I just might be the only coder in Sussex County, DE. Lauri has found mah jong groups, pickle ball groups, tennis, book clubs and church groups but still wants more girl friends. Overall our walk on the beach has been a success as we travel more, we got a six families to visit during the summer months, and travel to Falls Church to hang out with Brittany, Brad and grandkids.
