Portugal – Planning For A Two Week Adventure And The Flight to Lisbon

After creating a skeleton itinerary of places and activities in Portugal, getting our flights was the first most important and expensive purchase. This trip we decided to go business class since the trip to Europe is an “overnight” flight. We want to be rested and make the most of the first couple of days in Portugal.

Getting ready for Portugal

A travel book has proven to be essential. Provides details just not available in one place on the Internet. It is nice to have a convenient portable source of information that does not require a data connection. It gave us a lot of good ideas for walking tours in Porto and Lisbon. Thus far, we have not scheduled any guided tours.

After locking in our flights and deciding on destinations, Lauri booked our hotel stays.

We booked our hotels in Alfamma district in downtown Lisbon, Ribeira district in downtown Porto, Pine Cliffs Resort in the Algarve and Sintra many months in advance. To have lots of time for active exploring we limited the amount of jumping around between hotels. Pictured is our hotel in Sintra: The Sintra Boutique Hotel.

More important pre-trip planning activities:

  • We got lots of varied advice on how to purchase Euro currency. For us, research shows that going to many ATMs in Europe is going to cost a hefty 5% fee to receive cash in Euros. There are three fees you pay. Your credit card company may charge a fee for using an ATM overseas, the ATM machine’s bank will almost certainly be charging you a fee and third, you will pay a currency exchange fee every time you transfer USD to Euros and vice versa. Currency exchange booths in airports are an even bigger ripoff. In our case, the best exchange rate was buying Euros in advance through our own bank where there were no fees and the same exchange rate buying or selling.
  • When traveling in foreign countries I always find it kind to attempt speaking the local language. Downloading an app to your phone like Google Translate is an absolute must. If you show the kindness to try to speak the local’s language they are always more friendly and helpful. And if they speak English, let them introduce the idea of speaking back and forth in English and thank them for doing so.
  • We believe an absolute must insuring you have medical insurance for traveling in foreign countries. Too many friends have had a medical incident outside the US that ended up being very costly. Costco, USAA, and Faye are three that we found to be reasonable and gave us the coverage needed for safe travel.
  • Wifi and cellular coverage are not always available in certain locations when traveling abroad. We all get used to pulling up our favorite map application on our phone. The last thing we wanted to do was get caught in the middle of nowhere, no map and a language barrier. We plan to download local maps for each locality with Apple or Google Maps.
  • Set up an international cell phone plan from your carrier before you leave! Some plans only you charge you on the days you use your phone or the amount of data transmitted. Remember that your phone may do back ups and app updates automatically and this will count as data used. As we are all learning, big tech companies are constantly pulling your personal data off your phone and when you travel internationally you are paying for them to do that. Your phone has to be OFF to be sure of no charges.
  • Because Europe has so many countries near each other with different data and phone carriers, most of our friends living in Europe communicate with “WhatsApp”. It is also an inexpensive and effective method to communicate with friends and family back in the US if they also download the application.
